B&W has officially announced its intent to compete for the new contract to manage Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.’s Chalk River nuclear laboratories in a team with Battelle and the U.K. firm Cavendish Nuclear. The team was unveiled at a reception held in Petawawa, Ontario, on Nov. 19. “We believe this team has the vast experience necessary to ensure a strong future for Canada’s Nuclear Laboratories,” B&W Technical Services Group President George Dudich said in a press release issued yesterday. “This team offers world-class capabilities and valuable experiences gained from work in North America and the United Kingdom, and with our focus on growth in science and technology, our team offers an unrivaled track record of innovation.”
The Canadian government announced earlier this year its plans to use a “Government-owned, Contractor-operated” model for management of the Chalk River laboratories. The competition for the new management contract is expected to generate heavy interest from U.S. firms. The scope of work for the new contract will include all AECL-owned sites, including the Chalk River Laboratories, the Whiteshell Laboratories, the three prototype reactor sites and the Laprade heavy water storage site. This summer, the Canadian government held an industry day for the new contract and issued a Request for Information. The government had also been expected to begin this fall a Request for Response Evaluation (RFRE) process will involved detailed consultations with back and forth feedback with potential bidders.
