A Texas senator this week introduced a bill that could lower costs for certain out-of-state users of the Lone Star’s sole disposal site for low-level radioactive waste.
The bill by Texas Sen. Kevin Sparks (R-Texas 31), an oil and gas businessman representing the Midland, Texas, area, would lower to 15% from 20% a disposal surcharge levied on shippers of low-level radioactive waste who do not belong to the Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Compact.
Only Texas and Vermont belong to the Texas compact. These states dispose of their low-level radioactive waste at Waste Control Specialists’ facility in Andrews County, Texas. The facility is also open to members of other low-level-waste-disposal compacts, who must pay the surcharge.
As of Tuesday, the bill, SB 713, had not received a hearing in any Texas Senate committee.
