Big DOE cleanup gathering is this week near D.C.

The 10th annual National Cleanup Workshop, an annual gathering of Department of Energy nuclear-weapons-cleanup officials and contractors, will be held in Arlington, Va., just outside of Washington.

The annual gathering is hosted by the Washington-based Energy Communities Alliance, a group that represents the interests of people and local governments near DOE nuclear-weapons sites.

After a reception Monday evening, programming was to begin Tuesday at the cleanup workshop, which is among the biggest gatherings of the year for those working in or with DOE’s Office of Environmental Management (EM). The event runs through 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm was the scheduled keynote speaker and was to address the gathering for half an hour at 10:15 a.m. Eastern time on Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, Rep. Charles Fleischmann (R-Tenn.) was scheduled to speak at 8:15 a.m., followed by Candace Robertson, senior advisor for DOE EM, who was to speak at 8:30 a.m. It will be one of Robertson’s first public appearances in Washington since taking the helm of EM in May from William “Ike” White.

A roundtable scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday includes senior executives with DOE contractors:

• Jim Blankenhorn, senior vice president and lead of Environment and Security at Amentrum, Chantilly, Va.
• Heatherly Dukes, president of BWXT Technical Services Group, Lynchburg, Va.
• Michael Lempke, president of Nuclear and Environmental Services at HII, Newport News, Va.
• Joe McBreatry acting president of AtkinRéalis U.S. Nuclear.
• Bob Smith, senior vice president of Fluor Corp, Irving, Texas.
• Dena Volovar, president of Bechtel National, Reston, Va.
