Bechtel’s Systems and Infrastructure unit, responsible for the company’s government businesses, is undergoing a reorganization to consolidate “five regionally focused business lines to three global business lines”—Nuclear Security & Operations (NS&O), Environmental (ENV), and Defense & Security (D&S), according to a message sent to employees last week. The reorganization, set to go into effect June 1, comes in the wake of Bechtel’s unsuccessful pursuit of the U.K. Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s new contract to manage and decommissioning the UK’s set of Magnox nuclear power stations and two research sites. “Through a strong effort by our two United Kingdom-based business lines, we have established BSII as a credible contractor and business partner with both the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and the UK Ministry of Defence,” BSII President Craig Albert said in the message, adding that “we are establishing BSII International in London with the objective of continuing to internationalize our three global business lines.”
As part of BSII’s new structure, Michael Graham has been tapped to serve as general manager of ENV “with responsibility for project execution and business development of our environmental efforts worldwide,” BSII President Craig Albert said in the message. Graham previously served as U.S. Environmental general manager. John Howanitz will remain general manager of NS&O, while Brian Sheridan will assume the role of general manager of D&S. “Brian brings 30 years of experience in operations, IT services, intelligence, and business development that will serve him well in his new role,” Albert said.
Mike Hughes Heads to WTP
The reorganization will also involve Mike Hughes heading to the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant to serve as “manager for One System,” reporting to WTP Project Director Peggy McCullough. “One System” is the name of the project team developed by Bechtel and Hanford tank farms contractor Washington River Protection Solutions to ensure alignment between the vit plant and the tank farms. Hughes previously held the position of International Environmental general manager—a position he assumed last summer after a previous reorganization resulted in the split of Bechtel’s Environmental businesses into the U.S. and International lines. Before that, Hughes served as general manager for the Environmental business line. “I would like to thank Mike for all the support he provided to our Sellafield project and establishing a Bechtel Environmental presence in the UK,” Albert said in this week’s message.
John Williams will become manager of BSII International, which “will facilitate business development efforts outside the U.S. and provide operational support to our international projects,” Albert said, adding, “John will work closely with the three general managers and with Principal Vice President Rich Wall, BSII manager of Strategic Planning and M&BD.” Craig Weaver, who held the position of International Defense and Security general manager, is now set to remain in the United Kingdom “until the end of the year and support John and his team in the pursuit of Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) and other opportunities in the UK,” Albert said.
