The Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC), will receive $25 million from the Australian government to further its research into carbon capture and storage processes, CO2CRC announced this week. The funding will be in used, in part, to continue work at the Otway carbon storage project located in south-western Victoria, which is Australia’s first CO2 deep geological storage demonstration project.
The funding will be spread over five years and will enable CO2CRC to explore new research in monitoring and verification, the release says. “The wide-scale deployment of CCS is critical to reduce carbon emissions as quickly and cost effectively as possible,” Tania Constable, CO2CRC’s chief executive officer, said in the release. “This funding will allow CO2CRC to embark on a new program of research to improve CCS technologies. In particular, the intention is to lower the costs of developing and monitoring carbon dioxide (CO2) storage sites, enhance regulatory capability and build community confidence in geological storage of CO2 as a safe, permanent option for cutting emissions from fossil fuels.”
