Charges Filed in Y-12 Security Breach

A 34-year-old Clinton, Tenn., man remains in jail in lieu of $25,000 bond on charges related to his alleged breach of security Oct. 22 at the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant in Oak Ridge.

A Sessions Court hearing for Timothy Daniel Preston is set for Nov. 3 in Oak Ridge.

Preston is accused of driving his vehicle through the main security portal of Y-12, ultimately crashing the car and and fleeing from security police into the woods near the national security site. The reason for his actions in the predawn hours, with rush hour traffic coming into Y-12, has not yet been explained, and the hearing might provide some evidence in that regard.

Preston is charged with aggravated trespassing, trespassing by motor vehicle, felony vandalism, and driving while license revoked (third offense).

The National Nuclear Security Administration has not released details of the arrest or explained what caused the car to crash upon entering the plant before reaching production areas, although federal spokesman Steven Wyatt refuted rumors that suggested guards may have used weapons to shoot out the tires of the incoming vehicle. Wyatt said no firearms were fired that morning.
