URS late this week completed an effort to treat and remove the remaining radioactive sludge waste from the Separations Process Research Unit (SPRU)—a project the Department of Energy says eliminates the majority of the remaining radioactivity at the site. Since the work began last spring, URS has solidified a total of approximately 9,700 gallons of sludge at the Building H2 tank farm (WC Monitor, Vol. 25 No. 4). Building H2 is one of two major facilities that remain to be fully addressed at SPRU. The solidified sludge was set to Waste Control Specialists’ disposal site in Texas. “The radioactive sludge constituted one of the highest risks at SPRU,” DOE Federal Project Director Steven Feinberg said in a release. “The successful solidification of the sludge marks major progress in our environmental cleanup project, and enables us to put our full attention on moving ahead with the active decontamination and demolition of unused buildings at the site.”
