Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, the managing contractor for the Savannah River Site, recently completed the replacement of 68 heating and cooling coils that were damaged in an unusual cold snap in January. The coils at two analytical buildings at Savannah River’s F Area were among the systems across the site damaged by a strong freeze last winter that shut down the site’s biomass plant and associated steam lines. The coils were replaced at Buildings 772-F and 772-1F, and involved the cooperation of several different SRNL departments. “Because the large scope of work, the replacement of cooling and steam coils took five months to complete. There were times when the outside temperature presented challenges for us, so changes were implemented to perform sample analysis on the night shift while temperatures were cooler. Analytical specialist employees relocated items in the labs that produced heat. There was a tremendous effort put forth by the team to ensure we minimized impacts to our customers,” SRNS Project Lead Robert Becton said in a statement.
