FBP Undergoes Safety ‘Stand-Down’ After String of Incidents

WC Monitor
5/29/2015

After a series of minor recordable safety incidents this month at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, the site undertook a “safety stand-down” this week to review and focus on safety tenets. The May 28 stand down came when, after two months without a recordable injury, site D&D contractor Fluor-B&W Portsmouth recorded five injuries in May. The stand down involved meetings and discussions at the site on safety principles. “This is a chance to get everyone together, focus on these issues and raise awareness to avoid some of these incidents,” FBP spokesman Jeff Wagner said.

The issues that have occurred this month include a May 3 event in which a worker shut their hand in a vehicle door, resulting in a finger injury requiring stitches. On May 14, a worker slipped in an area with “wet floor” warning signs, resulting in a fractured leg. Also on May 14, a worker hit their knee on the corner of a table. On May 23 during work cutting a pipe at the X-326 building, a piece of pipe fell 18 inches onto a worker, resulting in a fractured foot. On May 26, a worker had a reaction to an insect bite.
