Work on a new High Pressure Fire Loop at the Pantex Plant was completed last month on schedule and more than $5 million under budget, the National Nuclear Security Administration said this week. Approximately 16,000 linear feet of high density polyethylene piping was installed around the plant to replace aged piping that had been failing. The project is expected to reduce the risk of unplanned facility system outages and lessen maintenance requirements for the project. According to the NNSA, because the project came in under budget, two 400,000-gallon fire protection water supply tanks and associated pumping facilities were also added to the project, as was the replacement of an additional 3,500 linear feet of piping designed to further enhance the plant’s fire protection system. “The successful completion of the High Pressure Fire Loop saved taxpayers millions of dollars while ensuring that critical NNSA mission work can be completed safely and on time,” NNSA Associate Administrator for Acquisition and Project Management Bob Raines said in a statement. “We have worked hard to get better at project management, and as our nuclear security enterprise ages and we continue to undertake similar projects, our work at Pantex should serve as an example moving forward. The dedication and teamwork demonstrated by B&W Pantex and the Federal project team were instrumental in the successful completion of the project.”
