Kevin Hall, who came to Oak Ridge in 2013 following a series of management positions at the Savannah River Site Office, has been named manager of the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office. In addition to overseeing management of DOE’s 33,500-acre Oak Ridge reservation, Hall will also oversee the Oak Ridge Integrated Support Center, which provides mission support services to DOE sites around the country.

Hall was deputy manager of the Oak Ridge office for the past couple of years and has served as acting manager since the death of Oak Ridge Manager Larry Kelly in February. At Savannah River, Hall was deputy federal project director for the Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Facility project and deputy manager of the site office. He previously was the assistant manager for mission assurance at Savannah River and before that was deputy project manager for the Accelerator for Production of Tritium project in Albuquerque, N.M. In a statement, Joe McBrearty, deputy director of field operations for DOE’s Office of Science, said Hall had exhibited “all of the qualities required to lead one of the Office of Science’s most important assets.”

China Heads List of Foreign National Visits to ORNL Last Year

China headed the list of foreign national visits to Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2014, which continued a trend over the past decade. Other countries in the Top 10 included India, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, South Korea, France, Russia, and Italy. There were a total of 110 countries on the list. According to statistics provided by ORNL, there were 3,799 total visits by foreign nationals in 2014, with about a fourth of those visits involving Chinese citizens.

ORNL Director Thom Mason said 68 percent of the foreign nationals visiting Oak Ridge were employed or holding guest positions at U.S. universities and research institutions. “So the main thing you’re seeing when you look at the numbers is that the science and engineering workforce in the U.S. is very diverse in terms of where people come from,” Mason said. About 450-500 of ORNL’s full-time employees are foreign nationals, the lab said.
