LANL Official Outlines Improvements Necessary for Proper Work Control Practices

A Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) official has issued guidance on proper work control practices following several "poor work control practices" incidents, including the downing of a power line that led to a daylong pause in maintenance work, according to a June 26 Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board site representative report released last week. The lab’s associate director for nuclear and high hazard operations outlined several areas "for needed improvement" in his memorandum to facility operations directors, including "oversight and control of work execution," "person-in-charge responsibilities for the validation, coordination, execution and proper closeout of the activity," and "pre-job briefings" for workers, according to the report.
