The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality cited Idaho Cleanup Project contractor CH2M-WG Idaho for five violations last month and is considering levying a small fine for the non-compliances, according to CWI. The violations involve failing to remove a damaged Accelerated Retrieval Project-V containment pan from service, failing to document a change for the containment pan and failing to comply with “universal waste lamp” requirements at the Radioactive Waste Management Complex, according to a Sept. 30 Department of Energy occurrence report. While CWI spokesman Erik Simpson said that the fine for the noncompliances would total $6,000, Robert Bullock of IDEQ said that the potential action is enforcement confidential and has not been finalized yet.
IDEQ said that the issues have been corrected. “Although these are relatively minor non-compliances, some of which we self-identified, we take any non-compliance very seriously. We have already corrected all non-compliances and are working with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality to resolve the notice of violation,” Simpson said. “Since assuming the Idaho Cleanup Project contract in 2005, CWI has amassed an exemplary environmental record. These findings represent the first in our more than nine years as cleanup contractor at the DOE Idaho Site. Although not in our contract, we also hire an independent company to audit our activities to ensure compliance with ISO-14001 requirements. Our record there has also been exemplary.”
