DOE Extends Comment Period for Hanford M-091 Milestone Changes

The deadline for submitting comments on proposed changes to the Hanford M-091 milestones of the Tri-Party Agreement has been extended until Sept 25 at the request of stakeholders. Comments may be submitted to [email protected].  The proposed new deadlines were negotiated in response to delays of shipments of transuranic waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico, which stopped accepting any new shipments following a fire and subsequent radiation release in February 2014. The changes will place more emphasis on treating and repackaging waste that has been retrieved from temporary burial at the Hanford Site and is stored in drums and boxes above ground. The Department of Energy still would be required to ship stored transuranic waste to WIPP by 2030.
