The Department of Energy on Tuesday said it would this year offer another 10 bus tours of cleanup operations at the Hanford Site in Washington state, after the originally planned 15 tours were filled.
The added tour dates at the former plutonium production site are Aug. 2, 3, 10, 16, 17, 24, 30, and 31, and Sept. 7 and 8, according to a DOE press release.
Online registration for the additional tours will open on June 1, and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. They will begin at 8 a.m. at the HAMMER Federal Training Facility, 2890 Horn Rapids Road in Richland, and last about four hours.
“This year’s public tour program will focus on environmental cleanup and provide guests with an in-depth look at several key projects that support today’s cleanup effort,” the press release says. The tour will stop at Hanford’s Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility, Plutonium Finishing Plant, and Waste Treatment Plant.
The tour is restricted to U.S. citizens at least 18 years old. Visitors will need to have photo identification to obtain a badge. Two forms of identification might be needed for visitors from Washington state and some other states. Additional information on the ID requirement can be found at Hanford.gov.
