NRC Commissioner George Apostolakis will not be re-nominated for another term as commissioner after his current one expires at the end of the month, his office confirmed this week. It was widely speculated that Apostolakis would not return at the end of his term, but this marks the first official notice of his pending departure. Both the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Apostolakis’ office declined to comment this week.
The White House has not named any potential replacement nominations yet, but two names have emerged who reportedly have begun to be vetted, RW Monitor has learned. Jeff Baron, a congressional staffer with House Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman (D- Calif.), and Steve Burns, a former general counsel for the NRC under then-Chairman Gregory Jaczko. These two join previously rumored candidates of Phillip Niedzielski-Eichner, the current chief of staff for NRC Chair Allison Macfarlane; Sam Fowler, a long-time Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee aide; and Mary Louise Wagner, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz’s Senior Nuclear Policy Advisor.
