Another Jump in COVID-19 Cases for NNSA This Week

By Dan Leone

It was another week of climbing COVID-19 cases at the National Nuclear Security Administration at deadline Friday, when the agency saw new infections outpace recoveries and leave the civilian nuke steward with 33 active cases.

Cases among National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) federal employees and contractors at the eight major sites across the country rose by 107, offset by 74 recoveries, a spokesperson for the agency told Nuclear Security & Deterrence Monitor Friday.

The NNSA has so far tracked a total of 901 cases since COVID-19 — the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus that broke out in China in 2019 — among its workforce since the outbreak hit the U.S. in January. There were two fatal cases at deadline, one at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and another at the Nevada National Security Site.

A few NNSA locales in particular continued to grapple with an increase in the rate of new COVID-19 cases this week.

The rate of new confirmed cases in Missouri rose again this week as a statewide spike continued, though Kansas City finally saw some reprieve from the latest surge, as the number of new infections there this week dropped by nearly 900, relative to a week ago.

In New Mexico, the rate of increase in new cases in four counties surrounding the Los Alamos National Laboratory rose sharply compared with last week. These four counties had 129 more new cases among them than in the prior week, even as Los Alamos County itself reported only one new confirmed case.

The rate of new infections also rose state wide this week in New Mexico, which relative to its population remained the leader in testing among NNSA host states.

Nevada’s new-case rate also jumped this week, with both Nye County, which borders the sprawling Nevada National Security Site, and Las Vegas reporting more confirmed new infections than they did a week ago.

National Laboratories Cases

Following are the reported numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases at NNSA nuclear weapons laboratories, and increases relative to the prior week, as reported Friday by the labs.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory:

Cases: 61 (+2). Livermore is the only lab that does not test its own employees.

Los Alamos National Laboratory:

Did not reply to a request for comment by deadline.

Sandia National Laboratories:

Cases: 100 (+14)

Albuquerque: 65 (+7)

Livermore: 11 (+0)

Internal tests: 3,106 (+192)

Teleworking: Roughly 60% of all employees.

Cases in NNSA Host Regions

Following is Nuclear Security & Deterrence Monitor’s weekly digest of confirmed COVID-19 cases, including fatal cases, in the host cities and counties of NNSA nuclear weapons sites. The figures below are based on cumulative cases recorded since the first confirmed U.S. instance of COVID-19 in January.

Data come from a tracker maintained by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and from select states, counties, and cities, where noted.

The Monitor tracks weekly changes, using the latest data available at deadline, which is sometimes current as of the Wednesday or Thursday before publication.

Testing figures represent the number of tests performed, not the number of people tested.
