Industrial gas and equipment supplier Air Products and Chemicals has captured and shipped its 3 millionth metric ton of CO2 at its hydrogen production facility in Port Arthur, Texas, the Department of Energy Announced in a blog post Thursday. “This achievement highlights the ongoing success of a carbon capture and storage (CCS) project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and managed by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL),” the post says,
The project uses vacuum swing adsorption to separate CO2 from the process gas stream. The CO2 is then compressed and transported to the West Hastings Unit (oil field) in southeast Texas, where it is used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). “It is estimated that the West Hastings Unit could produce between 60 and 90 million additional barrels of oil using CO2 injection,” according to the post.
