This opening keynote will offer an insider’s insight and perspective on the work of the DOE office tasked with overseeing cleanup of defense nuclear and atomic energy research sites. Even as it pushes forward with remediation projects in Ohio and Kentucky, EM is also faced with challenges, including a prolonged effort to reopen the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) storage facility and waste management concerns at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Hear from a top-level official about the successes the office has seen over the past year, and opportunities on the horizon.

Speakers will offer perspective from the State of New Mexico, DOE, and private industry on ongoing efforts to reopen the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant to shipments of transuranic waste for the first time since a fire and subsequent radiation release at the storage site in February 2014. The prolonged closure represents a serious problem for nuclear sites that have used WIPP to house their waste. Defense waste management is now in a new reality with the changes to 10-CFR Part 61, GTCC licensing opportunities, and the advent of DOE’s de-comingling approach. A fresh look at the current approaches to management of defense waste under this new paradigm may result in significant cost savings, de-risking onsite operations, and allowing the sites to provide regulators and the public with date-certain plans for removal of wastes that previously would need to wait for a deep geologic repository. Hear speakers from two major players in the nuclear game discuss how the new paradigm could have an effect on business strategy and the landscape of the market.
