The ExchangeMonitor’s 2017 Nuclear Deterrence Summit will focus on the ramifications of the change in leadership of the United States, organizers said this week.
The conference is scheduled for Feb. 27-March 2 at the Capitol Hilton in Washington, D.C., just over five weeks after the next president, either Democrat Hillary Clinton or Republican Donald Trump, takes office.
“With the upcoming transition to new U.S. leadership and the growing debate over how to balance national defense needs with global disarmament efforts, all eyes remain on policy makers, industry officials, and stakeholders throughout the U.S. nuclear enterprise,” Access Intelligence, which acquired the ExchangeMonitor Publications & Forums in 2015, said in a press release. “The Nuclear Deterrence Summit will once again bring these leaders together for the most timely discussions on the United States’ role in arms control and nonproliferation, potential changes to U.S. nuclear posture under a new president, and the dynamic nature of this country’s relationship with international allies and adversaries.”
The 2016 Summit included presentations by National Nuclear Security Administration chief Frank Klotz and a number of NNSA officials; a keynote by Lt. Gen. Jack Weinstein, Air Force deputy chief of staff for strategic deterrence and nuclear integration; and a spirited debate on U.S.-Russian strategic relations between Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak and Jon Wolfstahl, senior director for arms control and nonproliferation at National Security Council.
