The Department of Energy’s Hanford Site near Richland, Wash., is having a second straight week of daytime highs in the triple digits as several weapons complex sites are enduring extreme weather this week.
The Hanford high Wednesday was expected to hit 104 degrees Fahrenheit and site highs could stay at 100 degrees or above through next Monday, July 22, according to the National Weather Service forecast.
Likewise, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad, N.M. was expected to see a daytime high of 100 degrees Wednesday before cooling to the mid-90s heading into the weekend.
By contrast rain and thunderstorms are expected much of this week around the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico with a flood watch in effect for Wednesday night. The daytime highs in Los Alamos Country are only expected to be in the 80s.
A similar situation was forecast for Piketon, Ohio where DOE’s Portsmouth Site is located. A flood watch is in effect through 7 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, according to the Weather Service forecast for Piketon.
